Lady Macbeth as the Real Driving Force behind the Murder of Duncan I agree with the title that Lady Macbeth is the real driving force behind the murder of Duncan. The role that Lady Macbeth plays in the murder of Duncan is affected by many factors. In this essay, I will examine how her role was the real driving force in the murder of Duncan. We would look at the relationship of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, fate, and also prophecy of the witches. The witches’ prophecy has impact on Macbeth. When the witches call Macbeth Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and they say he’ll be king, Macbeth seems to be interested and believes in it. When she knows the news that Duncan is coming, she immediately plans to kill Duncan. â€Å" The raven himself is hoarse/ That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan/ Under my battlements†. She invokes the spirits to make her evil. This is because she wants the evil to make her strong and taking from her all natural womanly compassion. She wants the spirits to prevent any feeling of pity or guilt from reaching to her heart. â€Å"Stop up th’ access and passage to remose†. She also wants to exchange her milk for bitter to make her cruel. â€Å"And take my m ilk for gall, you murdering ministers†. This shows she is cruel and naturally more evil than Macbeth because she is the one who makes the cruel plan and persuades Macbeth to kill Duncan. Moreover, Lady Macbeth is the one who planted the seed. She places the ambition into Macbeth’s mind. When Macbeth arrives she greets him as Glamis and Cawdor and urges him to â€Å"Look like the innocent flower, /but be the serpent under’ t† that she will make all the preparations for the king’s visit and subsequent murder. â€Å"Leave all the rest to me†.
